South Dakota Medicaid

Medicaid is run by the state. Here is where South Dakota residents apply, and how it fits with other coverage.

Who runs Medicaid in South Dakota

Medicaid in South Dakota is administered through South Dakota Department of Social Services (DSS). Eligibility and applications are handled by the state, not by an insurance agency, and there is no charge to apply.

South Dakota has expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act (effective July 2023), so many adults with lower incomes can qualify. Expanded via 2022 ballot initiative.

If your Medicaid changes or ends

Losing Medicaid can open a special enrollment period to buy marketplace coverage. Act quickly, because the window to enroll after losing coverage is limited. You can call us to talk through the options, or contact the marketplace directly.

Medicaid and Medicare

Some people have both. If you are 65 or older, or disabled, and qualify for Medicaid, your state may help pay Medicare costs. South Dakota SHIINE (Senior Health Information and Insurance Education) can explain this for free.

Need coverage in between?

Short-term and TriTerm plans can start quickly and help with big unexpected medical bills. They are not ACA plans: they can ask health questions, may not cover pre-existing conditions, and what is offered varies by state.
